uPVC door lock and multipoint mechanism faults
The central gearbox is a common failure point, but it is not the only one. Hooks or rollers can jam, a full strip can fail, handles can wear, or the door can drop enough for the locking points to bind against the keeps. Replacing only the gearbox without checking the rest of the door can shorten the life of the new part.
Door alignment matters
If the handle is much easier to lift with the door open than with it closed, alignment is usually part of the diagnosis. Worn hinges, movement in the frame and incorrectly positioned keeps can all put unnecessary load on the mechanism. I check the complete locking action before deciding which parts actually need replacing.
Repairing older and discontinued systems
Multipoint systems change over the years and some original gearboxes or strips become obsolete. Where a suitable repair, compatible gearbox or sensible alternative is available, I will use it rather than declaring the whole door finished. Some jobs still require a complete mechanism, but that decision is made after the system has been identified properly.
Common symptoms
- Handle lifts but the hooks or rollers do not move
- Key turns but the door does not secure
- Handle has become stiff or floppy
- Door locks when open but not when closed
- Door is jammed shut
- uPVC or composite door has dropped or catches the frame
