A customer in Egham asked me to have a look at the front door because it was not working as it was supposed to and the handles were also on their way out.
He wanted to have the latch option that this particular multipoint system offered, but it was not active. As soon as the gearbox was out of the door, it became obvious that somebody had worked on it before and had cancelled that function because it was not working. Rather than replacing the faulty part, it looks as though the decision had simply been to make the door work as it was.
The existing handles also did not have the latch hold-back function, which is quite useful if you do not want to lock yourself out while bringing in the groceries or taking the rubbish out.
These parts are quite expensive and come in different sizes, so I did not have the exact ones in stock. I ordered everything for next-day delivery.
I returned with a new gearbox, a split-spindle set for this particular system and a new pair of handles with the latch hold-back function. Once everything was installed and tested, the customer had the door’s original operating functions back again.
