A customer in Hampton asked me to look at a bi-fold door that had become temperamental and would only lock or unlock intermittently.
Once on site, I explained the likely best- and worst-case outcomes and the customer agreed for me to investigate.
Removing the multipoint system from the master door was more involved than a standard door because the bi-fold mechanism also used vertical bolts. Once everything was disconnected, I removed the gearbox and opened the removable cover.
The fault was immediately visible. The small spindle operating the mechanism was missing several teeth, which explained why the system only worked some of the time. That component could not be replaced separately, so a complete centre case had to be ordered.
Bi-fold multipoint systems are expensive and not something I keep in normal van stock, so I secured the door overnight and returned the following day with the new part.
Refitting was not entirely cooperative. The top bolt dropped inside the door twice and had to be worked back into position a centimetre at a time, which tested my patience rather effectively.
Once the replacement centre case was installed, I adjusted the keeps and tested the complete system. The bi-fold multipoint lock was operating normally again.
