An estate agent I work with got in touch about a front-door multipoint lock in Isleworth that was not working. Somebody had already tried to repair it but had not managed to get the system operating properly.
Once on site, I could see what had happened. The previous repair attempt had involved fitting a gearbox from a different multipoint system. It was never going to work correctly because it was simply not the right centre case for the mechanism.
Fortunately, the incorrect part had not caused any permanent damage to the rest of the multipoint strip, so there was still a chance to save the existing system rather than replace the whole thing.
I had the correct gearbox in van stock and fitted it during the visit. I also replaced a few missing screws and then adjusted the hinges to bring the door much closer to the correct position within the frame.
With the proper gearbox installed and the door realigned, the multipoint mechanism was working normally again. A wrong-part repair attempt could easily have become a much larger replacement job, but in this case the original system was saved.
