A former customer asked me to attend one of his properties in Reading because the front door was having locking problems.
Reading is a little outside my normal working area, but he was a returning customer and specifically wanted me to deal with it, so on this occasion I agreed to make the trip.
The visit became more interesting when I discovered that the estate agent I was due to meet did not have any keys and the door itself was badly misaligned.
Once I could assess the locking system properly, pressing the handle showed that the multipoint mechanism was not retracting fully. That symptom points to a gearbox fault in the majority of cases.
I replaced the failed gearbox from van stock and fitted a new euro cylinder.
The mechanical repair itself was only part of the job. The door then needed around an hour of adjustment before the multipoint locking points and frame were working together as they should.
Once the alignment was corrected and everything tested, the front door was locking and unlocking properly again.
