A customer in Sunbury-on-Thames got in touch because the front door was draughty and had also become a little difficult to lock.
When I arrived, there was a noticeable gap at the top of the door and the latch was hit-and-miss when trying to lock it. The locking mechanism itself did not need replacing; the door needed realignment.
After a series of adjustments — a million of them if you ask me, although the whole job took around 15 minutes — the door was sitting correctly again, closing properly and locking as it should.
A draught together with a lock that is becoming awkward can be a useful warning that the door has moved out of alignment. It is worth sorting before the extra resistance starts putting unnecessary strain on the locking mechanism.
