A customer in Twickenham got in touch because an aluminium window could no longer be operated properly. The handle moved, but the window would neither lock nor unlock.
Once I removed the mechanism from the window, the fault did not require much detective work — it literally fell apart in my hand.
The original mechanism was no longer manufactured, so an exact replacement was not available.
I had a close alternative in van stock and adapted it to suit the existing window.
After fitting the replacement, I adjusted the frame keeps so the locking points lined up correctly.
The installation was slightly awkward because it was a first-floor window with no useful access from outside. My ladder was not exactly inspiring confidence that day, so I sensibly left it on the ground and completed the work from inside instead.
Once adjusted and tested, the aluminium window was locking and unlocking properly again.
