A customer in Ascot got in touch because the electric garage door had stopped working properly. The remote seemed unreliable and, when the door did move, it would only rise halfway before getting stuck.
Once on site, I asked the customer to operate it so I could see exactly what was happening.
The remote was actually still working, just about. The real problem was mechanical: one of the large side springs had snapped. With only one spring doing the lifting, the door was rising unevenly and jamming against the frame before the electric motor could take it any further.
That was probably a good thing — the motor was not powerful enough to simply rip the distorted door out of the frame.
I identified the required replacement parts and ordered them for the following day. The customer could not be there then, so we arranged a later date that suited him.
Once the new parts were installed, I reprogrammed the electric motor and worked through the spring-tension adjustments over several opening and closing cycles.
By the end, the garage door was travelling evenly through its full movement again and the electric operation was working correctly.
