A customer in Staines got in touch because the door was no longer locking properly and several of the hinges were in very poor condition.
When I inspected them, the problem was impossible to miss. Some of the hinges were being held together with zip ties. It was certainly not an ideal repair, although according to the customer it had kept the door going for a while.
I measured the existing hinges carefully and ordered the correct replacements for the following day.
Replacing door hinges is not especially complicated in principle, but doing it properly on site is slow and precise work. Manufacturers position the hardware with jigs; on an existing door every hinge position has to be measured, checked and checked again before drilling.
I fitted the replacement hinges and worked through the alignment until the door sat correctly in the frame.
After roughly two hours, the new hinges were installed and the door was locking and operating far better than it had before.
