A customer in Staines got in touch about an aluminium sliding back door that was no longer opening.
Once on site, I was greeted by an old, jammed barrel, probably the original one. The mechanism was not budging, which left me with little choice but to snap the cylinder so I could get access inside the multipoint lock. Even after that was done, the multipoint mechanism still would not release normally, which was a good indication that it was damaged as well.
I drilled a small access hole in the aluminium frame to expose more of the gearbox, and that was when the broken bits became visible. At that stage it was clear this was not going to be a repair mission but a replacement. The failed gearbox had to be forced so the door could finally be opened.
The original system was no longer available to purchase, so a new multipoint system had to be made to work with the door. I’m telling you now… I’m probably not doing one of these again for anyone 🙂 There was so much measuring and cutting, then more measuring and more cutting, that it drained the week’s workforce out of me.
It took some work, but the new system was fitted, adjusted and the sliding door was saved from scrap.
