A customer in Twickenham got in touch because she wanted the front door lock changed. What sounded like a straightforward cylinder replacement turned out to be a little more involved.
While I was there, she also mentioned that the door would not stay closed on the latch. A quick look showed why: the latch itself was missing.
Testing the multipoint mechanism uncovered the bigger issue. From both inside and outside, the key would not retract the latch properly. It looked as though somebody had previously removed the latch so the door could continue to operate without repairing the actual fault. The customer had assumed the part had simply gone missing at some point.
I explained how the door should have been working and what would be needed to restore the proper operation. She decided to go ahead with the repair.
I fitted a new gearbox from stock, replaced the cylinder from stock as requested and then carried out several adjustments to the door and locking system. Once everything was aligned and tested, the latch, key and full multipoint mechanism were all working as intended again.
