A customer in Bracknell got in touch because a window handle was no longer engaging with the locking mechanism, leaving the window unusable.
The handle design made the job more awkward than it needed to be. There was a small release hole in the handle plate that had to be accessed before the handle could be dismantled, but with the window blocked shut there was no practical way to reach it.
To be fair, the manufacturer’s customer service was excellent and tried to help with precise drilling points, but by that stage I was not interested in turning a failed handle into a delicate engineering project if there was a simpler way forward.
With the customer’s permission, I removed the handle so I could finally check whether the fault was in the handle itself or in the window mechanism behind it.
Fortunately, the mechanism was fine and only the handle needed replacing. I ordered the correct replacement and returned at a convenient time to fit it.
When installing the new handle, I deliberately oriented it the opposite way so that if the handle or mechanism ever needs attention again, the release point can actually be accessed. The window was then fully operational again.
