While visiting a customer in Feltham to provide a quotation, I came across a front-door cylinder installation that was worth highlighting from a security point of view.
The cylinder projected well beyond the handle plate instead of sitting close to flush. That leaves far too much of the barrel exposed and makes the lock much easier to attack than it should be.
This was less about a specific repair and more about explaining why the way a cylinder is fitted matters just as much as the lock itself.
If a euro cylinder needs replacing, I would normally look for a properly sized cylinder that does not project unnecessarily beyond the furniture. It is also worth considering additional protection such as a cylinder with sacrificial sections designed to fail in a controlled way during an attack.
For customers wanting a higher level of security, a correctly matched security-handle and cylinder combination can provide substantially better protection than a basic exposed barrel.
The important point from this job was simple: even a reasonable lock can be compromised by poor sizing or installation, so the cylinder should be chosen to suit the actual door and handle arrangement rather than simply fitted because it happens to turn the key.
