A customer in Ashford called because the front door could no longer be locked.
Once on site, it was clear that the multipoint gearbox had failed and needed attention.
I removed the complete multipoint mechanism from the door and first tried to revive the gearbox with cleaning and lubricant, but it made no difference.
This particular gearbox was riveted shut, so there was no sensible way to open the centre case and inspect or repair the internal components individually.
I had the correct replacement gearbox in van stock, swapped the failed unit over and then made the small adjustments needed to get the locking points operating cleanly with the frame.
After testing the handle, key and multipoint system, the front door was locking normally again.
The original mechanism had lasted somewhere around 20 years, so it had certainly done its share of work before finally giving up.
