A customer in Watford asked me to look at a bathroom window that would no longer lock because the handle was not operating the mechanism properly.
The window was top-hung and the working space was very restricted, so rather than struggle with the mechanism in place I removed the sash from its hinges and worked on it safely at a more comfortable angle.
Once the hardware was accessible, the failed part was obvious. The locking component had broken into several pieces.
Bathroom windows live in a humid environment, and moisture combined with a lack of maintenance does not help the life of moving metal components.
I had the correct replacement part in van stock and fitted it during the visit.
Around 30 minutes later, the sash was back on its hinges and the window was opening, closing and locking properly again.
