A local customer in Ashford got in touch because the front-door handles were no longer engaging the rest of the multipoint mechanism properly, although the door could still be locked.
I explained the best- and worst-case possibilities before starting. As soon as I saw the hardware, I recognised that the mechanism was obsolete, so a straightforward replacement was unlikely to be the first option.
I removed the multipoint strip from the door and opened the gearbox. Inside, one of the spindle push plates had slipped behind the latch and was blocking the internal movement.
The parts themselves were still serviceable. I repositioned the displaced component, cleaned the gearbox, lubricated the moving parts and tightened everything back together.
After rebuilding and refitting the mechanism, I tested it and the handles were once again operating the multipoint system correctly.
The customer was also shown what had happened and advised not to force the mechanism if it became stiff again. Another obsolete system saved rather than replaced unnecessarily.
