A customer in Farnham got in touch because a side garage door was no longer locking and asked me to see what could be done.
Once on site, I removed and tested the mechanism and found that the gearbox had failed and was no longer driving the rest of the multipoint system. I checked my van stock and my suppliers’ catalogues, but the original gearbox was no longer available on the UK market.
That changed the job considerably. Instead of a straightforward gearbox replacement, the practical solution was to replace the complete multipoint mechanism. Fortunately, I had a suitable full-length mechanism in the van and the customer was happy to go ahead.
I cut the new mechanism to the required length, fitted it to the door and removed the old frame keeps. The door then needed realigning before the new keeps could be positioned correctly.
After a few more adjustments, the new multipoint system was operating cleanly and the garage door could lock properly again. A discontinued gearbox had turned a simple-looking repair into a full mechanism conversion, but having the right stock on the van meant it could still be completed on the visit.
