A customer in South Croydon got in touch because the garden uPVC door had become difficult to lock and unlock.
My first thought was that the door might simply be out of alignment, but testing showed that the frame position was not the main problem.
The rear door was used much more heavily than the others at the property and, despite being around 10 to 15 years old, the multipoint mechanism had never really been serviced.
Once I inspected it properly, there was debris throughout the mechanism and the moving parts were badly in need of lubrication.
I cleaned the system, gave it a thorough lubricant treatment and replaced the worn handle springs.
After reassembly and testing, the handles and multipoint mechanism were operating properly again without needing a replacement gearbox.
A relatively simple service was enough to restore the door, which is exactly why maintenance is worth doing before dirt, friction and wear turn into a broken mechanism.
