A customer in Stanwell Moor got in touch because the multipoint locking system on her garden door was becoming increasingly difficult to lock and unlock.
I removed the complete mechanism from the door and traced the intermittent fault to one of the locking hooks, which was jamming unpredictably.
I tried dismantling, cleaning and lubricating the existing system, but the fault remained. Because an intermittent hook can eventually leave the door jammed shut, I recommended replacing the complete mechanism before that happened and the customer agreed.
I did not have my normal temporary overnight lock available because it was already with another customer, so I adapted the existing mechanism to provide temporary security until the replacement arrived.
A couple of days later I returned with a genuine replacement system and fitted it.
I then made the necessary adjustments so the multipoint mechanism operated comfortably for the customer’s wrist strength rather than requiring excessive force.
The garden door was locking and unlocking smoothly again without the worry of the old hook jamming.
