A customer in Sunbury-on-Thames asked me to look at a top-hung uPVC window that would no longer close properly.
The problem was visible straight away. The top-right corner of the sash was sitting lower than the left, and because the window had continued to be used in that condition the hinge had eventually become damaged.
This is the sort of fault that often starts as a small alignment problem and gradually becomes a parts-replacement job. Lubricant can help with some stiff mechanisms, but it will not straighten a sash or repair a hinge that is physically failing.
By the time most people call me, unfortunately, the damage has already progressed far enough that the original part cannot be saved. That is one of the reasons I share these jobs: spotting the warning signs earlier can sometimes prevent a replacement.
I had a suitable pair of uPVC window hinges in van stock, so I removed the damaged set and fitted the replacements.
Once adjusted and tested, the top-hung window was opening and closing normally again.
