A maintenance company in Hounslow got in touch because one of their tenants could no longer open the bedroom door, even though there was no lock on it. From the description, I knew straight away that whatever type of latch it had was probably gone.
Once on site, I managed to slip the latch back and open the door without causing any damage. I had a suitable fire-rated latch on the van, so I removed the damaged one and fitted the replacement there and then.
As soon as I took the spindle out of the old latch, the mechanism more or less fell apart in my hands. Unfortunately, this kind of latch failure seems to be occurring more and more often lately.
The new fire-rated latch was fitted and the bedroom door was back to opening and closing properly.
