A customer in Guildford got in touch because a large sliding door at the back of the property would no longer lock.
Once on site, I confirmed that the locking mechanism had failed. The door was an older, very large sliding unit and the original mechanism was obsolete, but repair parts were still available, so the customer decided to go ahead rather than replace the whole system.
This was not a quick mechanism swap. The sliding door had to come off its rollers and be laid on its side. To reach and remove the failed mechanism, I then had to cut an access hole in the bottom corner of the door.
The rollers created another problem. They were badly corroded and had seized, which could easily have turned into another replacement cost. I soaked them thoroughly with lubricant and eventually managed to get them moving freely again.
With the locking mechanism repaired, the rollers working and the door back on its track, everything could be reassembled and tested. The old sliding door was locking and moving properly again without adding the cost of replacement rollers to an already involved repair.
