A customer in Surbiton got in touch because the lock on a garden door was becoming increasingly difficult to operate.
I first tried to save the existing lock with a thorough clean and plenty of lubricant, but the mechanism still refused to work properly.
I explained the available options and the customer decided that, rather than replace it with another basic lock, this was a good opportunity to move to a British Standard sash lock.
I had the suitable replacement in van stock, removed the failing lock and installed the new British Standard unit during the visit.
A few adjustments were also needed on the keep side of the frame so the new lock would engage cleanly rather than being forced against poor alignment.
Once everything was fitted and tested, the garden door was opening and locking normally again with the upgraded replacement in place.
