A customer in Teddington had just moved into a new property and wanted the front-door lock changed for security.
He wanted to keep the existing style if possible and simply replace the old, worn hardware with new. I initially expected that to be straightforward, but the existing type turned out to be close to obsolete and much harder to source than expected.
I had to call the customer back and explain that the original plan was not realistic because I could not find a suitable replacement.
The rest of the ironmongery on the door was black, so I suggested moving to a British Standard nightlatch available in a finish that would suit the existing hardware.
The customer agreed. Once the new parts arrived, I fitted the upgraded lock and external furniture, then made the adjustments needed to get everything working properly.
I even refinished a small rim surround so the installation matched the rest of the black door hardware as closely as possible.
The customer ended up with a more secure replacement that suited the existing appearance of the door rather than an awkward mismatched installation.
