A customer in Walton-on-Thames got in touch because the aluminium bi-fold door had become difficult to lock and unlock, sometimes taking up to ten minutes to open.
I removed the multipoint mechanism and found that the top section was not being engaged correctly.
The gearbox came off and was stripped down on a piece of kitchen roll because, naturally, the blue workshop towels were still sitting in the van and by that point I was too involved in the job to go back for them. ๐
It did not take long to identify the failed component.
The replacement was not something I carried in normal van stock because the part is relatively uncommon and expensive, so I ordered the correct one.
I temporarily disconnected the upper section of the mechanism so the customer could continue using the door while the replacement was on order.
A couple of days later I returned and fitted the genuine replacement part.
After reassembly and testing, the bi-fold door was locking and unlocking properly again.
